Parasite Testing in Racing Pigeons¶
Parasites are a common pathogen category in racing pigeons. This page collects testing and control knowledge for the most important protozoal pathogen of the species — Trichomonas gallinae.
Pathogen Overview¶
| Pathogen | English | Test method |
|---|---|---|
| Pigeon trichomonads | Trichomonas gallinae | Real-time fluorescent PCR / microscopy |
Characteristics of Trichomonads¶
- Spread orally: feeding of squabs by the breeding pair and shared drinkers are the main transmission routes;
- Typical lesion: yellow-white caseous pseudomembranes in the oral cavity and throat;
- Drinking-water management is key: contaminated drinkers are an important vehicle for spread within the flock;
- Differential diagnosis matters: oral white plaques must be distinguished from candidiasis and the mucosal form of pigeon pox, and the medication used is completely different.
Control Principles¶
- Clean drinkers daily and disinfect them on a regular schedule;
- Check breeding stock before a race to reduce transmission through feeding;
- Follow a proper deworming protocol and avoid indiscriminate medication;
- Isolate affected pigeons and control stocking density.
