Bacterial Testing in Racing Pigeons¶
Bacteria are a major pathogen category in racing pigeon disease. This page collects testing and control knowledge for 3 groups of common bacterial pathogens in racing pigeons.
Pathogen Overview¶
| Pathogen | English | Test method |
|---|---|---|
| Salmonella | Salmonella spp. | Real-time PCR / bacterial culture |
| Chlamydia psittaci | Chlamydia psittaci | Real-time PCR |
| Mycoplasma | Mycoplasma spp. | Real-time PCR |
Common Features of Bacterial Disease¶
- Zoonotic risk: both Salmonella spp. and Chlamydia psittaci can infect people, so always wash and disinfect your hands after handling sick birds;
- Tendency to become chronic: Mycoplasma spp. and similar agents readily turn into chronic infection with repeated flare-ups;
- Let susceptibility testing guide treatment: irregular antibiotic use drives resistance, so treat on the basis of pathogen testing and susceptibility results;
- Environmental spread: contaminated feed, drinking water and dust are the main vehicles.
Control Principles¶
- Rodent control and wild-bird exclusion, and clean feed and drinking water;
- Damp cleaning to cut dust (Chlamydia spreads on dust);
- Quarantine newly introduced birds, remove persistently shedding individuals;
- Disciplined medication: full course, guided by susceptibility testing, no unnecessary use.
