Pathogen Categories in Racing Pigeons¶
Racing pigeon pathogens fall into three broad categories: viruses, bacteria and parasites (protozoa). This page is the category index.
Pathogen Categories¶
- Virus testing — transmission, signs, diagnosis and control for 7 common racing pigeon viruses;
- Bacterial testing — transmission, signs, diagnosis and control for Salmonella spp., Chlamydia psittaci and Mycoplasma spp.;
- Parasite testing — transmission, signs, diagnosis and control for Trichomonas gallinae.
Why the Category Matters¶
- Different drugs: antivirals, antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs each target entirely different organisms;
- Different control strategies: for viruses the emphasis is immunity and biosecurity, for bacteria hygiene and disciplined medication use, for parasites drinking-water management and deworming;
- Different testing methods: each pathogen group is matched to a different test (PCR / culture / microscopy).
Testing Tips¶
- When signs overlap, a combined multi-pathogen panel is advisable;
- Treat only after confirmation, to avoid blind medication and resistance;
- Quarantine of newly introduced birds is the first line of defence against bringing a new pathogen in.
